絵画ではなく、すべて手織りの芸術　特別展「生誕140年記念 染織家 山鹿清華─宙翔ぶイマジネーション」開催　京都市京セラ美術館で12月20日まで

京都を代表する近代染織家・山鹿清華（1885-1981）の足跡をたどる約40年ぶりの大規模回顧展「生誕140年記念 染織家 山鹿清華─宙翔ぶイマジネーション」（産経新聞社ほか主催）を、京都市京セラ美術館（京都市左京区）で12月20日（日）まで開催中です。

分業制が一般的だった当時の染織界において、山鹿は図案の構想から織り上げまでを一括して手がける「手織錦（ておりにしき）」を自ら創案。伝統的な素材にとどまらず、化学繊維やビニール紐など異素材も大胆に取り入れ、用の美にとどまっていた染織を芸術へと昇華させました。本展では、祇園祭や長浜曳山祭を彩る豪華な懸装品（けそうひん）をはじめ、ロケットや東京タワー、家庭用電気冷蔵庫を描いたユニークな作品群、さらには建築家・村野藤吾との協働による空間装飾までを一堂に展示。伝統の技と現代的な造形感覚が融合した、山鹿清華の多彩なイマジネーションの軌跡を一望いただけます。

The Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art is currently hosting Yamaga Seika: Boundless Imagination in Textile Art - Celebrating the 140th Anniversary of His Birth through Sunday, December 20, 2026 (organized by The Sankei Shimbun and others). This rare showcase marks the first major retrospective in roughly 40 years dedicated to Yamaga Seika (1885-1981), one of Kyoto's foremost modern textile artists.

Defying the strict division of labor in Kyoto's traditional textile industry, Yamaga pioneered "Teori-nishiki" (hand-woven brocade), personally overseeing every stage of creation from design to final weave. Boldly incorporating synthetic fibers and vinyl cords alongside traditional materials, he elevated textiles from utilitarian craft into an autonomous fine art form of individual expression.

This exhibition presents the rich trajectory of Yamaga’s imaginative career: from lavish decorative float hangings for the Gion and Nagahama Hikiyama Festivals, to astonishingly modern tapestries featuring rockets, Tokyo Tower, and domestic refrigerators, as well as grand interior decorations created in collaboration with architect Murano Togo. We invite you to experience a one-of-a-kind world of textile art where traditional craftsmanship seamlessly merges with modern design sensibility.
