31日前引け時点の日経平均構成銘柄の騰落数は、値上がり94銘柄、値下がり127銘柄、変わらず4銘柄となった。
日経平均は大幅反落。1043.96円安の65361.60円（出来高概算9億4638万株）で前場の取引を終えている。前週末28日の米国市場でダウ平均は9.45ドル安の53559.99ドル、ナスダックは138.93ポイント安の26402.42で取引を終了。ジャクソンホール会合での連邦準備制度理事会（FRB）のウォーシュ議長講演を控え、寄り付き後、まちまち。シカゴ購買部協会景気指数（PMI）や消費者信頼感の悪化で売りに転じた。ウォーシュ議長はインフレに鈍化が見られず、FRBが政策でインフレ対処に焦点を当てるべきだと主張した事が信頼回復につながり一時買われたが、終盤にかけハイテク中心に利上げを警戒し売られ終了。米株式市場の動向を横目に、31日の日経平均は737.05円安の65668.51円と反落して取引を開始した。ウォーシュ米FRB議長の講演を受けて米国の利上げ観測が意識され、前日の米ハイテク株安を嫌気した売りが値がさの半導体関連に先行した。売り一巡後も戻りは鈍く、指数は下げ幅を拡大。月末を迎え機関投資家のリバランスに伴う売りも重なり、前引けにかけては1000円を超える下落となった。自動車や電力など一部には買いが入ったものの、指数を支えるには至らなかった。
