前日20日の米国株式市場はまちまちの展開となった。米ハイテク関連が売られる一方、小売り関連の決算はまちまちで、投資家の慎重姿勢が続いた。市場は今週開催予定のFRB年次シンポジウムやパウエル議長の講演に注目しており、様子見ムードが強まったとの見方がある。米株式市場の動向を横目に、21日の日経平均は105.29円安の42783.26円と続落して取引を開始した。米ハイテク株安を背景に朝方から半導体関連株の一角やハイテク株に売りが先行。じりじりと下げ幅を広げた後は、42600円付近で軟調もみ合い展開となった。ジャクソンホール会議でのパウエル議長の講演を控えて持ち高調整の売りが優勢となったが、一定の押し目買いも優勢だった。総じて、目立った新規材料が乏しいなか、終日様子見ムードが根強かった。そのほか、日銀の利上げ観測が強まっており、国内長期金利は2008年以来の高水準を更新している。
大引けの日経平均は前日比278.38円安の42610.17円となった。東証プライム市場の売買高は17億4188万株、売買代金は4兆87億円だった。業種別では、医薬品、輸送用機器、建設業などが値下がり率上位、非鉄金属、鉄鋼、パルプ・紙などが値上がり率上位となった。東証プライム市場の値上がり銘柄は41.5％、対して値下がり銘柄は54.2％となっている。
