前日16日の米国株式市場は反発。主要7か国（G7）首脳会談でいくつかの通商協定合意の可能性をトランプ大統領が示唆し、投資家心理が改善。さらに、情勢悪化を回避すべくイランが核兵器開発問題を巡り協議再開を望んでいるとの報道に加えて、イランとイスラエル戦争でトランプ政権が依然外交的解決を優先している考えが明かになったことも手伝い、終日堅調に推移した。米株式市場の動向を横目に、17日の日経平均は55.35円高の38366.68円と続伸して取引を開始した。買い先行で始まり指数もじりじりと上げ幅を広げる展開となったが、その後は38500円台でもみ合い上値の重さがうかがえた。米株高を受けて東京市場でもハイテク株や半導体関連株に物色が向かったほか、外為市場で円安・ドル高に振れたことが下支え要因となった。また、イスラエルとイランの軍事衝突による中東情勢を巡る過度な警戒が後退しており、国内の投資家心理も改善した。ただ、引き続き高値警戒感があるなか、買い一巡後は利益確定売りが出て上値を抑えた。
大引けの日経平均は前日比225.41円高の38536.74円となった。東証プライム市場の売買高は15億8764万株、売買代金は4兆412億円だった。業種別では、その他製品、非鉄金属、ガラス・土石製品が上昇した一方で、鉄鋼、海運業、医薬品が下落した。東証プライム市場の値上がり銘柄は58.7％、対して値下がり銘柄は36.4％となっている。
